Meet Rosie, a Belgian Schipperke (pronounced skip-per-key), the oldest dog breed in Belgium from the 1600s. It is rare to see her breed in this country, so she may have been separated from her family who were tourists. Due to her small size, she was unable to compete for food when she was out on the streets. Rosie is funny, fearless, affectionate, curious, confident, patient, independent, and loyal. She would be perfect as a family dog because she is great with kids, but also would bond well with a solo owner or a couple. She normally does not vocalize much, but when she’s happy, excited or wants a treat, she yodels rather than barks. It sounds like a cute chuckle! Rosie would make any owner happy.

Say Hi to Baby Blue, an amazing blue-eyed Merle, 2.5 years old. As a small shivering puppy, she threw herself at our feet outside Hopa Bazaar, and begged with her striking blues eyes to be picked up. Her vision in keen, but her blue eyes are sensitive to light and she squints when outside in direct sunlight. She likes to relax in a darkened room during the day, and prefers to spend most of her time indoors. She has grown up to be loyal, protective, intelligent, responsive, and is an excellent watch dog. She’s territorial and needs her own space, and would make a lovely companion for a solo owner or couple.

Meet Gracie, a gorgeous German Wire-Haired Griffon, who ran through the Refuge compound gates to escape being chased by a pack of boys. She is gregarious, affectionate, comical, active, sociable, and squeals when she wants to play. She’s completely non-aggressive, and thrives on human companionship. As a hunting breed, she is very agile and is excellent at running, jumping, and playing “Catch-the-Toy-on-a-String”. She loves a lot of exercise, so she would be perfect for someone with an active lifestyle, who goes running or likes to go on adventures. Because her coat is wire-haired rather than thick, be careful she doesn’t get overheated in the sun, and always has plenty of water.
